Ni Una Menos: an urgent call in Argentina

Lara Andrés, Laura Oszust Observatorio de Violencia contra las Mujeres "Ahora Que Sí Nos Ven"

Femicides have always occurred in Argentina, but it was not until 2015, after the crime of Chiara Páez, that triggered mobilizations throughout the country with the slogan "Not one less" (Ni Una Menos). Since then, femicides have gained an unprecedented public and media attention. This movement made these hate crimes against women visible, and brought forth the need for the creation and implementation of public policies that prevent and curb gender violence. It also defined the power of a new (but also old) political actor: the women's and LGBTIQ + movements. In this presentation, we will demonstrate the particularities of Ni Una Menos as a social phenomenon, the importance of having records and data on gender violence, the characteristics of femicides in Argentina and the outstanding debts of the cry of Ni unx menos.
